K3 Firmware 4.58 - Problem using K144XV

Lothar Sack-2
I am using my K3 with the internal transverter K144XV. Today I installed
the (beta) Firmware 4.58.
My problem: Entering any 2m- QRG, e.g. 144.300 by pushing on the front panel
"FREQ ENT" 1 4 4 . 3 0 0 "ENTER (AFX)" results in changing the K3 to
180.300 MHz
e.g. 145.525 results in 181.525 MHz ...
Always exactly 36 MHz too much! Also when entering QRGs by my contesting
software via RS232...
The only way to activate 2m is using the bandswitch-button - then my K3
starts with 144.000 MHz.
Any changing between HF-Bands is correct.
Am I doing something wrong or is it a bug of the new "BETA"?

Re: K3 Firmware 4.58 - Problem using K144XV

Geoffrey Downs-3
Yes my K3/K144XV does the same. When it showed 181 MHz on the VFO A display
(after entering 145) ERR PL1 also appeared briefly on the VFO B display.
Then, after using the bandswitch to go to 2m the VFO A display started with
144.000 MHz but on subsequent visits to 2m via the bandswitch it stayed
where I had left it, as normal, and did not revert to 144.000 MHz

Re: K3 Firmware 4.58 - Problem using K144XV

Guy, K2AV
Changes to a version identified to any level of testing always causes the
version number to increment.  Unless they blow it and just plain forget.
:>)  They're up to at least 4.60.   Versions in field testing are usually
distributed by ad hoc lists and only show up in the directories when deemed
ready for beta.  Wayne works on his own situational set of rules about how
and when that happens.

Re: K3 Firmware 4.58 - Problem using K144XV

Julian, G4ILO
The latest beta firmware appears to be dated 8 November and this issue was raised later than that. So I guess not.

Matt Zilmer
See Wayne's earlier email.  This update fixes the 180 MHz problem with
the 144 Mhz transverter as well.

I've modified the K3 software to allow use of the FM filter for ESSB
transmit. (The current beta release, 4.58, already allows AM transmit
with the FM filter.)

The AM filter (6 kHz BW) is still a much better choice for AM and ESSB
receive, because it provides better close-in dynamic range. But it
turns out that the difference between the two filters is fairly minor
in transmit. I have a new Rigol spectrum analyzer which made it easy
to do a detailed survey at both narrow and wide spacings.

If you're interested in testing the new field-test release (4.60),
please email me directly.

Re: K3 Firmware 4.58 - Problem using K144XV

Julian, G4ILO
The latest version in the FTP folder is 4.58, which I see has the 144MHz problem :( .

If the only way to get 4.60 is by email from Wayne the problem is that Gmail doesn't allow email containing .exe or .zip. It doesn't strip the attachment out it just dumps the whole email. So if Wayne sent it I didn't get it. I'm surprised that a firmware version with a known bug is still on the FTP site.

Re: K3 Firmware 4.58 - Problem using K144XV

Guy, K2AV
I'm using Gmail and have used Gmail for a long time.  Wayne's stuff always
comes just fine.  There are a lot of Gmail users among the field testers.

The beta (it's beta, not production) is left up as long as people are
whacking on it.  Sometimes additional problems are found.  Once in a great
while, Wayne will pull a beta with a really bad problem.  But mostly not.

This is the way it's worked all along.   There is no problem.

73, Guy.

K3 - More reasons I like Elecraft

K9QJS
In reply to this post by Julian, G4ILO
I really like the K3 Utility that runs on the Mac.    It works.   I don't have to mess around with a manufacturer's Window's based application to do firmware upgrades by running it under Parallels.    These recent rounds of much-appreciated firmware upgrades remind me how much I value the decision that Elecraft made to support the Mac version of the utility as well as other platforms.

I like the K3-available USB/Serial cable with firmware … it works without my having to pull out my hair the way I did on my previous XCVR with my made-in-China cable.   Then again I don't have much more hair to pull out.

The 58 beta that improves text decode works very well.   I'm new to the K3 and don't know what it was like with a previous firmware version.    I am working on learning CW, and the text decode feature brings another degree of enjoyment as I continue on my learning path.

I like the serial number decision … to not camouflage serial numbers the way many manufacturers do but rather to use sequentially assigned serial numbers in the build order.    I am perfectly OK associating my Ham identity with my serial numbered K3.

I had fun this past weekend casually participating in the Sweeps.   I worked some states and provinces that I had not worked previously because it was easier for me to hear the stations that were not in the sweet spot for my dipoles direction.

Thanks, Elecraft !

Hoop
