K3 & K3S for sale

Charlie T, K3ICH
Obviously, a lot of us are dumping our K3's (plural) & K3S' (also plural) as their prices have fallen through the floor with the introduction of the K4.
(Can't say I'm thrilled about THAT, but it IS inevitable as new models are introduced.)

However, a lot of the 'for sale' listings cleverly try to sneak the "S" onto the model number, or imply that it is a K3S when the radio really is NOT a K3S.
Bear in mind, if your radio does not show K3S on the front panel, it is a K3, albeit upgraded, but  NOT a K3S.

The new synthesizer boards will improve performance, but there are some subtle differences between a K3 and a K3S that no amount of updating with new boards or mods can change.

While the K3 concept of buying a newer "upgraded" synthesizer board for example,  rather than a new radio sounds like a great idea which will surely change the performance, I feel it is NOT a feasible solution, as it generates a worthless board that is only good as a pistol target.
My particular course of action was to sell my K3 after I had taken out what ever options I could add to a new K3S.
That way, I get the latest production changes (note, there ARE a number of them pertinent ONLY to the K3S) and,  no junk boards are generated.

Too bad I can't do the same thing with the K4.
(Got a nice bullet here I'm about to bite on !)

73, Charlie k3ICH

Bob McGraw - K4TAX
I'm keeping my K3S.    I'll decide on a K4 next year.

Dear Charlie,

be noted that even if the radio shows K3S on the front panel it does not
has to be the K3S inside.

There is possible to buy K3S "facelift" kit on eBay which allows to your K3
looks like K3S...:)
(...they say "K3S esthetic upgrade kit")
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Elecraft-K3S-Esthetic-Upgrade-Kit/273980434356?hash=item3fca81a7b4:g:mKkAAOSwnh5cVLdO

I am staying glued to my old K3 (fully upgraded to almost K3S level but with
genuine old look, hi) in shack. No K4HD planned as I do not see any benefit
in term of RF parameters...

I wish Elecraft the best of luck with the K4, and I am sure they will
sell a lot of them. I am keeping my loaded and upgraded K3, serial
number 0007. I am sure the K4HD would provide slightly better
performance and probably an improvement in usability, but my K3 is
already more than good enough for an old guy who is not "performing" so
well himself anymore.

Also note that K3 serial numbers ended in the 9### range. K3S serial numbers began with 10,000.

Don't sell the K3 short.  The basic K3 is still one of the finest radios
ever made and the difference between it and newer radios is hardly
noticeable to the human ear.

Re: K3 & K3S for sale

Charlie T, K3ICH
I suspect in a strong signal Field-Day or contest environment,  the K3S will
still outperform all versions of the K4 except the high-end K4HD.

Re: K3 & K3S for sale

k6mkf
In reply to this post by Buck
I try to be objective about my Amateur Radio purchases, but don't always
succeed.

When I was thinking about upgrading from my K3 to a K3S, I got a quote from
Elecraft for the upgrade, then I made a list of the K3S improvements and
calculated my incremental cost for the upgrade, assuming a sale of my used
K3.

For me, the cost/benefit ratio was just too high, so I stayed with the K3,
which is the best performing transceiver I've ever owned.  It's still a joy
to operate every day.

When the K4 is in full production and shipping, I'll make these same
calculations again.   With used K3 prices lower now, the cost/benefit ratio
will likely be even higher - but the K4 feature set may tip the scale in its
favor.

OK, back to working what DX there is with my trusty K3 ...

Re: K3 & K3S for sale

In reply to this post by Charlie T, K3ICH
It seems like the K3S has been grouped together with the K3. The K4
will be a different animal. Like K3ICH, I have three K3S's and with
any software I have to select K3 as the rig. The K3 has been out of
production for years. I have seen a number of K3 ads listing the radio
as K3S, here is one current eBay example of this false advertising
(watch for word wrap):
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Elecraft-K3S-160-6-Meter-Transceiver-100-Watt/352746875929?hash=item52215a2c19:g:H9QAAOSweK9dSvSa

While the K3 concept of buying a newer "upgraded" synthesizer board

To each his own. I own two 2008-vintage K3s, each with second RX,
several roofing filters, 100W amp and tuner. I also own a single-RX K3,
bought used from a list member, with no tuner, and the same selection of
roofers. All three have the new synth board, and the first two have the
new transverter interface (to get the improved preamp), the spare has
the old one. I view the new I/O board more of a convenience by the
integration of the USB interface, and I didn't go for it.

I consider these radios 90% of a K3S from a performance point of view.
Indeed, when the K3S was introduced, I was able upgrade simply by buying
those boards, without having to buy a new radio (as you would with any
other manufacturer. That's one of the great things about Elecraft's way
of doing things! And if I decided to sell them (not likely), I would
describe them just as I have here -- 2008 vintage K3s with selected
upgrades.

Re: K3 & K3S for sale

John -

It is interesting that the seller of the K3 from that estate does
acknowledge that it is not 'really' a K3S, but justifies listing it as one
because of unspecified upgrades. It sure is important to pay attention to
details.

An upgraded K3 (synth, other)  is far better than a mere 90% of an S.  Where’s the 10% as far as actual performance (not just a dB or two here and there) is concerned?

Of course, you could (it was originally talked about but never offered as an “official” upgrade, but you can order it as a part now) buy a K3S 4-layer RF board, re-kit your K3 and put it in.  But, honestly, the difference between the radios is in the margin.  If it had been THAT much better it would have been the K4 and the new one would have been a K5.

I have more than a little sellers's remorse over parting with my updated K3, but I’ll get over it … maybe this Winter.  Although even that likely may not be a better radio than a K3 with the critical updates, at least until the hybrid “H” update is released.

It is always important with an Elecraft radio to pay attention to the
details - Serial number, options installed (including filters), and
upgrades installed are always the minimum essentials.

Of all things this weekend I picked up a late model K3/10 (7928) bare bones except it has both receivers which I thought unusual.  It has the 2.7, 500 and250 filters in the main receiver and only the 2.7 in the sub.  Both Synthesizers are of the older version.
